02-YA-TEACHER-RYT-200June Connell (RYT-200) is a Pranakriya-Certified Prenatal yoga teacher and a certified Kundalini yoga teacher.  She leads prenatal classes at several studios in the Tampa Bay area, including Yoga Village, Green Locus and Wendy Fit, integrating her expertise in labor and birth with her knowledge of breath and movement to create unique and fulfilling prenatal yoga classes and workshops.

Yoga is about oneness, “yolking,” and the merging of the body, mind and spirit.  Pregnancy is a woman’s opportunity to live that oneness with her developing baby so they can connect with each other physically, energetically and spiritually during the nine months that they are one.  Studies show that creating a strong bond during pregnancy will help create a solid foundation for their relationship long after the baby leaves the womb.

Prenatal yoga can help moms:

  • Sleep better
  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Increase the strength, flexibility and endurance of the muscles they’ll need for childbirth
  • Decrease lower back pain, nausea, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches and shortness of breath
  • Decrease the risk of preterm labor, pregnancy-induced hypertension and low birth-weight

Birth and Yoga Class at Yoga VillagePrenatal Yoga takes advantage of the ligament-softening hormone relaxin that is present in a pregnant mom’s body in the later months of pregnancy by offering postures that open the hips and pelvis so that baby can move through the body more easily in labor.  Yoga helps build stamina.  It stretches and strengthens, helping mom create a comfortable pregnancy and a soothing labor. Prenatal yoga classes often include special meditations to create peace and tranquility for a woman and her baby.

Most prenatal yoga classes include physical postures called asanas, breath work called pranayam, and meditations to help strengthen and balance the nervous system and the glandular system, the body’s two internal communications systems vital to a healthy pregnancy and birth.

A few things pregnant women should NOT do in a yoga class include NO:

  • Inversions
  • Rapid breathing, such as Breath of Fire
  • Postures on the belly
  • Double leg lifts
  • Backbends
  • Lying on the back for long periods
